Welcome to Mangalitsa Monday!!! In this series I will discuss fun facts about the mangalitsa breed, starting with their origin…
The Mangalitsa, Mangalitza, or Mangalica is a breed of pig that originated from crossing a wild boar with a Hungarian pig! The name Mangalitsa means: “hog with a lot of lard” and is pronounced mahn-ga-leets-ah. This breed is known as the Kobe Beef of pork and the marbled meat is unlike any other pork! With their lard also come their wool!! They are curly haired pigs that actually come in three main recognized colors: Red, Blond, and Swallow Bellied. We raise Swallow Bellied and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how hardy they actually are! This old world breed of pig was amoungst the most popular breeds in the 1800’s, but nearly became extinct in the 1990’s and only 200 or so were documented to be alive!
Stay tuned for next Mangalitsa Monday… but for now… enjoy these Mangalitsa Butts!!!
